Serious cyclists who wonder whether to ride up the coast or down are advised that traveling southward ensures a tailwind most of the way, and better views of the coastline. Get your hands on a copy of the Oregon Coast Bike Route Map (660K) at highway information centers or from the Oregon Department of Transportation; it has all the practical information you’ll need.
Plan to spend part of your trip in Gold Beach exploring the Rogue River. If you’re planning on only cycling part of the Oregon Coast, the Southern Coast is probably your best bet. Traffic is lighter than up north, the highway is wide and the views incredible. Think Big Sur, but better.
Oregon Coast Cycling Festival
The Oregon Coast Cycling Festival is held every year on the weekend after Labor Day, traditionally a time of the year when cyclists can count on perfect bicycling weather, less traffic on the roads, and more room at area motels, hotels and campgrounds. The Oregon Coast has become one of the most popular destinations for bicyclist worldwide.
"This might be the most beautiful place to ride a bike on the planet and we make it a lot of fun for everyone," Weinert said. "But I dont know who enjoys it more, the riders or the volunteers!"
